The Indians played a part in Newton County’s history. No records have been found to tell just how big a part the Indians had in the county’s history. One important fact is that the community Biloxi is of Indian origin.
Biloxi is in southern Newton County on Cow Creek and was settled soon after 1800 by Indian emigrants from east of the Mississippi River. It is one of the three known sites of Indian villages in the county. The name comes either from the name of the Indian or from Biloxi, Mississippi. Indians from the tribes west of the Neches River continued to visit around Biloxi until reconstruction days. By 1830 there were several large plantations in cultivation. Biloxi was a post office in 1856, but it was discontinued when the Bleakwood office was established in 1867.
